How grade level by birthday works

Grade level is not just a function of age — it depends on the kindergarten cutoff date in your state or country. The cutoff date determines which school year a child starts kindergarten, and every subsequent grade follows from there. A child who started kindergarten in the 2023–2024 school year is in Grade 3 in 2026–2027. The calculator does this math automatically: select your country and state, enter the birthday, and get the current grade and full K–12 timeline instantly.

Typical grade levels by birthday month (September 1 cutoff states)

For the majority of US states using a September 1 cutoff: children born January through August are typically in the higher of the two possible grades for their age (e.g., a 9-year-old born in May is in Grade 4, not Grade 3). Children born September through December are typically in the lower of the two grades (a 9-year-old born in November is in Grade 3, heading to Grade 4 the following fall). The calculator gives you the exact answer regardless of birth month.

Grade levels outside the US

In the UK, children start one year earlier than in the US (Reception at age 4 instead of kindergarten at 5), so UK Year groups are offset by one. Year 1 = US Grade 1, Year 6 = US Grade 6. Canadian grades align closely with US grades. Australian Year levels also align (Year 1 = Grade 1), though school starts at a different time of year (January/February). Select your country in the calculator to get the correct regional cutoff and grade naming.

FAQ

How is grade level determined from a birthday?

Grade level is determined by the kindergarten entry year, which depends on whether the child turned 5 by their state's cutoff date. From kindergarten, each school year advances one grade. The calculator computes this automatically.

Does grade level by birthday vary by state?

Yes. Two children with the same birthday in different states may be in different grades if their states have different cutoff dates. For example, a child born October 15 is in Grade X in a state with a December 1 cutoff, but in Grade X+1 in a state with an October 1 cutoff.
